Section 8 to Home Ownership
For more than 30 years, Rhode Island Housing has been making it easier for families to make Rhode Island their home. We recognize that some families who have been renting their home using a Section 8 voucher could buy and keep a home of their own, if they just had the right guidance and support. Many hardworking families do not even realize that homeownership may be within reach, or for other reasons, they may have never considered it a possibility. Rhode Island Housing can help.

Our experienced staff understands your concerns and has collaborated to create this unique product just for you: the Section 8 to Home Ownership Loan. The program builds upon the success of our
FirstHomes line of safe, affordable mortgage products and our free Homebuyer Education .

To help eligible families who have been renting in specific communities buy and keep homes of their own, the Section 8 to Home Ownership program provides:
• Free
Homebuyer Education
• Enhanced
self-sufficiency training
• Individualized
support and guidance

This consumer friendly program benefits both the participating families and the communities where they purchase homes. It promotes successful homeownership, economic stability and community growth, while minimizing the potential of defaults that negatively impact both the family and neighborhood.

Your family may be eligible if all of the following apply:
• Your family has been participating in the
Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCVP) and the Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program for a minimum of two years
• You are a successful graduate of the FSS Program
• You are first-time homebuyer*

*For purposes of this program, a first-time homebuyer is defined as a family of which no member has owned an interest in a residence during the past three years. This definition also includes a “single parent” or “displaced homemaker,” within the meaning of federal law that, while married, owned a home with his or her spouse.
