Assistance for Immediate Housing Needs
If you need immediate assistance finding a home due to a temporary housing crisis such as due to eviction because your landlord has been foreclosed upon, the Emergency Housing Assistance Program which is administered by the Rhode Island Department of Human Services and implemented through the eight Rhode Island Community Action Program agencies may be able to help.

Rhode Island Housing also provides rental assistance or cash assistance to individuals and families at risk of becoming homeless due to a short term housing emergency through the RoadHome initiative.

If you feel you are a victim of unfair housing practices, visit Fair Housing RI to learn more about your rights and to access resources.

Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program
In addition to managing 20,000 apartments for low-income senior citizens and families, as well as Rhode Islanders with disabilities, Rhode Island Housing manages the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program in Rhode Island.

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program is the federal government’s major program for helping income-eligible participants afford safe, healthy homes in their community. The Housing Choice Voucher Program allows the individual or family to choose a home, including their present home, and use a voucher to obtain rental assistance. The landlord must agree to the terms of the program and the home must meet safety requirements.

The landlord receives a housing subsidy directly from Rhode Island Housing, on behalf of the participating family. The family then pays the difference between the rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program.

For more information about the Housing Choice Voucher program visit our Renters section or contact kalmonte@rihousing.com or 401-429-1483. For detailed information, you can also view the documents listed on the resources page in this section that are available from HUD.

Section 8 Subsidized Apartments
The Section 8 Subsidized Apartment Rental Assistance Program is a federal program that helps income-eligible individuals, families, senior citizens, and people with disabilities to pay just 30 percent of their income towards their rent so they can afford safe, healthy homes. For example, if you earn $1,000 a month, you would pay just $300 toward the monthly rent.

Housing authorities do not manage these programs.

Rhode Island Housing manages 20,000 subsidized apartments. About 15,000 of these apartments are eligible for rental assistance from Section 8 funding. These developments manage their own waiting lists. Please contact the management office(s) of the development(s) in which you wish to reside to apply to be placed on the waiting list or to obtain more information.
